What We Do

Clean Label Project is a non-profit that focuses on three core areas:

Product Category Evaluations & Benchmarking

We conduct in-depth reviews of entire product categories to assess overall contaminant levels. Using sales data from sources like Nielsen, SPINS, Amazon, and others, we identify the top-selling products—typically representing 80–95% of category sales—to determine which products to test.

Product Certification

We certify individual products based on standards rooted in California’s Prop 65 law, European Union regulations, US federal regulations, and our own proprietary category data. All products are tested by Ellipse Analytics, an independent, third-party lab.

Advocacy

We engage in advocacy at both the state and federal levels to raise awareness and push for stronger laws and regulations aimed at reducing contaminants in consumer products.

As part of our category research, the Clean Label Project publishes the Clean 16 —a list highlighting products with the lowest overall levels of contaminants. Please note: if a product does not appear on the Clean 16, it doesn’t necessarily indicate high contamination. It may not have been included in that particular category study. However, these products may still be eligible for individual certification – or may already be certified.

Our research is powered by proprietary data from Ellipse Analytics, an independent ISO-17025 accredited lab. They conduct the testing for our certifications as well as provide the summary data used in our category reviews and Clean 16 lists. While we review lab results to ensure compliance with Clean Label Project standards, we do not release individual product reports.
