The CDPH taking on the use of the word “natural”

The California Department of Public Health is taking comments as it relates to allowing the use of the word “natural” on pet food products that contain synthetic and chemical ingredients.

At Clean Label Project, we believe that what’s NOT on the label is sometimes what’s most important- this requires transparency! Over the past several years, there have been countless class action lawsuits as it relates to the word “natural” in human food and consumer products. Companies including Campbell’s soup, Ben & Jerry’s and Trader Joe’s have all been part of consumer lawsuits alleging that they misrepresented their “natural” products when they included genetically modified ingredients, artificial sweeteners, and hydrogenated oils.

At Clean Label Project, we believe that the definition of the word ‘natural’ should be consistent across all aisles of a grocery store. And that synthetic and chemical ingredients are in no way ‘natural.’ We want to know what you think.

The California Department of Public Health is currently taking public comments. Email them at regulations@cdph.ca.gov and tell them that the pet food brands don’t deserve a break when it comes to the quality, safety, and purity of America’s pet foods. Tell the State of California to help protect consumer trust and transparency by keeping ‘natural’ consistent with the rest of the food and consumer packaged goods industry and that deceptive marketing ultimately puts consumers at a disadvantage.
